Comment: I came here last night to pick up my take-out order. I ordered a salmon roll, a spider roll, and then a rainbow roll. I enjoyed all my rolls last night, and they were delicious. It was much needed for my late dinner. The restaurant was spacious inside, and the staff were friendly and inviting. Ill come here again soon for a dine-in experience. :)

Comment: Ordered a teriyaki chicken and two rolls. Rolls were just ok. Teriyaki chicken was really awful. For this kind of restaurant, I expected a typical teriyaki on grill with a grill mark but it was exactly like a Trader Joe’s frozen package heated up in the microwave. OMG! Another thing that was very disappointing was the floor itself. It was so sticky that I hear the noise every time I moved. My shoes were eventually stuck on the floor while I was eating LOL!

Comment: Came to the CWE just to try this spot and the hostess said they werent seating anyone because they were too busy and closed more than an hour after we had arrived. They didnt acknowledge us when we walked in and had us wait, without a greeting, while other door dash/pick up drivers who came in after us were pulled ahead of us to be assisted. Disappointing and we will only give our money to Cafe Mochi going forward.

Comment: If you’re looking for exceptional food with sub par service, this place is for you. The food was pretty good, just took some time for it to come out. The servers didn’t even come by once to check on us to see how the food was or if we needed anything. We were sitting one table away from the chefs and they didn’t ask how the food was either. After paying for our bills, they did not say anything when we were leaving the restaurant. Overall, gave us a bad taste in our mouths and was not worth the wait. They did not even want to honor a military discount for us and laughed at us when asked. If the overall service was excellent, we would’ve tipped more than the 20% added gratuity, however we did not believe 20% should’ve been added for the experience we all had.

Comment: Stopped in while staying in the area because of the positive reviews. Im glad we did. The sushi was fresh. We also ordered the gyoza appetizer, which was very good. We were given complimentary miso soup and ginger salad. Both were delicious. The service was prompt and polite. The atmosphere was cozy. Definitely a good place, albeit slightly pricey. I dont mind paying a little more for quality food, so it was definitely worth the price.

The cream cheese on the roll tastes as if it were sitting out all day, and the portion size of meat in the rolls were scarce. Every bite was perfect. I know I had some yellowfin, Salmon, Oturo, and shrimp. Not sure what else was on the plate, but would be happy to try it all again. Comment: One of the most comforting, positive dining experiences I’ve had in STL. I sat by the bar and was served graciously by Benji (I hope that’s how he spells his name). All night we bantered, being the perfect complement with the food. The restaurant isn’t overly flashy, it has the right amount of decorations to make it feel comfortable, without seeming like it was trying to be overly ethnic.The service was spectacular, quick, and fresh. The food was as advertised. We started with Miso Soup to warm our tummies in the cold weather, followed by tempura. Crispy and tasty. My favorite part of the meal was the Hamachi Kama, a grilled yellowtail jaw. Finally we had a Chirashi and Kampai Special Roll.If I could give this place more than 5 stars, I would.

That was also an overall good experience.I ordered the five-piece sashimi (chefs choice), an order of shumai, the shrimp and veggie tempura, the Fancy Roll, and the Low-Carb Roll. Uber Eats practices contactless delivery and of course I want to support that. But when I opened the bag, the shumai were nowhere to be found. There was a small green salad and a (very) small portion of miso soup included with the rest of what Id ordered. Im not sure if there was a mix-up or if the salad and soup come with the sushi.The sashimi was just delicious. Very fresh and flavorful. The tempura was also very good--I like it dipped in a bit of soy sauce instead of the tempura sauce. The soup was cold, which is fair considering the distance, and the portion was just a couple swallows, but it was all right. The salad is still in my fridge. Both rolls were quite yummy. I actually liked the Low-Carb Roll best--it has a great fruity tang and is wrapped in crunchy cucumber. It is hard to pick up with chopsticks, but no one judged me at home. 😅All in all, a great meal. I made Uber Eats aware of the missing item and have been told theyll refund me. I didnt think to take pictures of the food! Very unlike me. Must have been hungry.Ill absolutely return to Kampai but Im likely to go to the CWE location in person instead of ordering in.

The food wasn’t ready, I was told I could go back outside and they would bring it out. 5-10 minutes later I had to go back inside as the food still wasn’t ready. Waited inside for another 5 minutes and was finally handed the food.We drove off quickly, as we were now running late, only to find out that that not all of the food was in the bag..It wasn’t in there, because they never rang it up.. not that I could have waited for them to make it at that point anyways.I’m upset that the order was repeated over the phone twice and the food wasn’t rang up correctly. (The order contained 3 items.. we got 2)I called the restaurant to explain what happened and was told by the waitress that “I wasn’t charged for it so she couldn’t understand what the issue was” and that it’s not her fault it wasn’t rang up correctly. Not once did they try to remedy the issue, I was just told that I should have done more in checking before I left.Yes, I could have checked but at that point we needed to get back on the road. Their “15 minutes” turned into 30+.If the drive-thru can get an order correct 95% of the time.. I expect a restaurant of this caliber to be able to handle the same simple task. If it can’t, then just don’t take call-in orders.

The parking available is street parking that goes pretty fast so you might have to park a little ways from it. I used a Groupon and had no problem redeeming it. I noticed they also provide happy hour specials M-F from I think 5-6. I found heating to be an issue too, you could see your breath in the bathroom. Overall it was nice.

I always feel like sushi and tapas are the best for a main meal because you need to buy a lot to feel satisfied, but the sushi at Kampai was perfect, substantial portions and tasted great, just loved it. Ordered Volcano roll, Snow Roll and 1 other I forget. It came with salad and soup. Absolutely perfect amount for 2 people. Also had hot saki which was great, warming on a rainy evening. Comment: Ive visited Kampai 2x before my recent visit with great experiences. During this occasion the restaurant was uncomfortably cold. Understandably, its the winter time and many restaurant blow cold air for a fast customer turnover. However, in the cold season I would imagine most restaurants would attempt to create a comfortable and cozy dining atmosphere. Most of the patrons left their coats on while dining, and the restroom was far colder.Aside from the atmosphere, I have loved their rolls in the past and am always open to trying a variety of sushi and sashimi at various restaurants.We ordered the squid as an appetizer, which was flavorful, but unbearably chewy. Our dinner choice was the Kampai Combo (BEWARE it is Chefs Choice as if there are some surprising elements to it) hoping that we would be able to try a unique specialty roll from the Chef (as the waitress suggested that we inform of any allergies) only to be highly disappointed by a typical California Roll -_- The salmon, tuna, and yellow tail sashimi were perfect, no complaint. The nigiri shrimp and salmon were excellent. However, the nigiri tuna was so overly spiced that neither of us wanted to finish it after the first bite.I would normally recommend Kampai to our friends. This time we were quite disappointed with our sub-par/subzero experience and may give it another chance in the spring when its warmer. We most likely not be return customers though.

The yaki udon was just boiled noodles drowned in a store-bought sweet and sour sauce, rather than an actual stir fry (or the wok was on low heat), and thus a very mediocre and bland westernised dish, what one would expect from a western franchise store that claims to serve asian food. It is not difficult to fry up noodles and season with dark soy sauce, so to make this dish so badly is an acheivement in itself, for which the chef can be commended. Was also charged 20 percent gratuity for the act of said boiled noodles and sauce beinf brought to the table, further adding insult to injury. In conclusion, the worst Asian food Ive had from an Asian-run establishment.

Comment: I recently moved back to St. Louis and am on the hunt for a new sushi restaurant to haunt. This is the first sushi place weve tried that I was delightfully pleased with. We tried several things. We got the Takoyaki which I really enjoyed. My husband thought it was a little mushy, but thats kind of just how the dish is. We got the Joy roll which was pretty good, but the torching process left a sort of burnt taste. We also got the Vegas roll which was good. I definitely want to try their other rolls. We also got some nigiri: masago, seared tuna, and uni. All were great, but make sure you try uni in your lifetime. SO GOOD! Well definitely come back, but are still on the hunt for a place with more interesting rolls. The service here was outstanding. Only downside is theres no parking lot, only street parking.

Closes briefly between lunch and dinner. Parking can be tough around dinner time. Service is usually quite good. Menu is pretty comprehensive but they are missing sunomono.

Comment: Try the fancy roll, for the love of all that is glorious. Its amazing! Everything roll we tried had shrimp tempura in it and all were incredible. The best sushi Ive had in a long time and the waitress was sweet, even as busy as she was. We went on a Thursday night with reservations. Great experience.

Comment: Used to be better. Sushi is okay, but last time we were there the rice was a bit overdone, resulting in sushi rolls that didnt hold together very well. Might try one more time and will see how it is. For the quality I feel it is a bit pricey, even for sushi.

Comment: Went there with a friend and paid 20 dollars total for 6 small slices of random fish. We thought for a moment that the food was complementary, but it was actually our entree. I would have rather given that money to a random homeless person. Dont go here unless you enjoy spending a lot of money for a small sample of food.

Comment: Well, its a nice neat place and the service is not bad, expect the hostess forgot to include a pen in our bill.I do not quite understand how one could reach the conclusion such as sushi is fantastic based on several American style rolls. They are not even sushi. They are some localized, Americanized variation of sushi which in no ways reflect the restaurant authenticity and the true quality of the the sushi.Sushi is alright, but definitely over priced. The same price I can get much better quality sushi other places. It is probably true that it is good in CWE, but mediocre in the broader region of STL.

Comment: With that price I can have x1000 better quality sushi in any asian quality. The taste was not much better than panda express sushi. they charged +20% tips for nothing, they dont even fill my glass. For spice rolls, they just use some chinese hot sauce on the regular salmon rolls.

Comment: Beyond question, the WORST sushi I have ever eaten, and Ive been eating sushi since the early 1970s. Small pieces of NOT fresh fish on tiny balls of rice. Not only did it taste off, it had a slimy texture. Eeeeeeuuuugh. SO not good. Greasy, tasteless tempura with a bland dipping sauce. Even the seaweed salad tasted off. I would NEVER go back and would NEVER recommend the place.

Comment: I cant actually comment on the atmosphere and decor, because I ordered delivery from them a couple times rather than dining in. I called them up on my way home and asked if they deliver sushi or only the standard entrees. Of course, much to my delight, they deliver everything on the menu! It was about $60 for two people to order 5 rolls, but it was well worth it. The sushi was fantastic and the service was excellent. Ive been to most of the sushi places in St. Louis, and Kampai definitely ranks up there with the best like Fin and Oishi. Much better than Drunken Fish thats right down the street. If you like eating in a loud hipster restaurant with all undergrads drinking fruity drinks then by all means hit up the Drunken Fish. If you want good Sushi in the CWE, try Kampai!

Comment: There are a ton of sushi restaurants in the CWE, but Kampai is by far my favorite. It doesnt have the fanciest fusion rolls (Sub-Zero), nor does it serve crazy martinis that sound Japanese (Drunken Fish.)What it does have is simple: authentic sushi with quality fish at very reasonable prices.Where else can you get a large bowl of Chirashi with good quality, large cuts of sashimi including miso and salad for $10 (lunch special) ? Heck, this alone brought me back at least twice a week. With their rolls, they stick mostly to the classics, and they do them well. Good selection of Japanese beer and sake, but this is first and foremost a sushi stop.I have since moved from St. Louis and miss this place terribly. I have eaten in more sushi places than I can count, but Kampai always holds a place dear to my heart.

Comment: Food is pretty good. I prefer their sushi to their cooked meals (ie grilled salmon).Had a cherry blossom cocktail...it was just ok...not the best.
